Topsham
The
town of Topsham overlooks the Exe estuary and for many years
was the main port of Exeter. There are numerous historical
houses which reflect its wealth from its shipbuilding and
commercial days. Today the town is well-served by many good
small shops, pubs and restaurants. A well-supported Saturday
market takes place in Matthews Hall, which is also the venue
for local plays and other events. There are public tennis
courts, a bowling green, and a superb open-air heated swimming
pool. Topsham Museum, situated in one of the lovely houses
on the Strand, is well worth a visit; it has free entry and
a superb tea-room.
The Exe estuary is renowned
for its birds and wildlife, and a ferry crosses the river
to the footpath beside the Exeter Canal. It is possible to
walk or cycle to Exeter through the Exeter Canal Country Park,
or to the Turf Hotel at the entrance to the canal (a ferry
makes river trips to this delightful place regularly from
the Trout's Boatyard). The Exe estuary is at the edge of the
western gateway to the World Heritage Site: the Jurassic Coast.
